Collection Call Out: Huf x Pulp Fiction

Introducing our new favourite obsession – the Huf x Pulp Fiction 25th Anniversary capsule collection!

An iconic collaboration made up of 14 items ranging from $59.99 through to $149.99, the collection pairs Huf’s signature quirky and quality garments with Pulp Fiction’s timeless graphics, dialogue and film stills across a selection of finely crafted tees, jackets, knits hoodies and more.

"We’re always looking to partner with brands and projects we’re passionate about. Pulp Fiction has always been a favourite film amongst the design team and we took a shot and reached out to Miramax to see if it was even a possibility. It turned out they just happen to be having conversations internally about working with HUF as well. All of this just happened to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the film, so it was all great timing!"

Read on as we chat to Huf’s Creative Director, Romeo Tanghalat, and we dive deeper into how this iconic partnership came to life, as well as exploring the fine attention to detail of the design process, his favourite pieces of the range and what’s next to come.

SurfStitch are also proud to host a 48 hour online exclusive as of midnight the 30th of January in the Australian market. Make sure you click here to check it out and get your hands on it first!

Give us a rundown of your position at HUF?
My name is Romeo Tanghalat, I handle Creative Direction for HUF and oversee all seasonal and collaborative collections for the brand.

What was the approach with Miramax to start the conversation to partner with HUF to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film?
We’re always looking to partner with brands and projects we’re passionate about. Pulp Fiction has always been a favourite film amongst the design team and we took a shot and reached out to Miramax to see if it was even a possibility. It turned out they just happen to be having conversations internally about working with HUF as well. All of this just happened to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the film, so it was all great timing.

Was the initial design process driven by HUF or did Miramax have an idea of how hey wanted the legacy of Pulp Fiction to be presented in the streetwear market?
The initial design process was driven by HUF, so being who we are, we pushed the boundaries. Some of the original concepts may have been a bit too much (like we may have pitched a Gimp tee) others made it through right away, but in the end it was truly a collaborative effort between both parties.

Were there guidelines you had to work within or were you given free rein to design this range with a HUF ‘f$*k it’ attitude?
There were definitely guidelines. Which is understandable because at the end of the day, we’re dealing with someone else’s art. Everything first had to go through an approval process with the Miramax team and ultimately go through Quentin Tarantino’s team as well. He was busy promoting his new movie at the time, but gave final approval on everything which was really cool.

It seems like the collection focuses on key elements of the film , was the collection based on this with a view to build on already key styles within the HUF business?
We definitely went into this with the intention of designing a Pulp Fiction capsule through the HUF lens. So, all the layouts, colors, font choices, movie stills all had to have that HUF feel and yes, build on key styles we already do within our own line.

What’s your favourite scene in Pulp Fiction & did this play a factor in the design process?
Ezekiel 25:17. The scene when Jules is reciting the bible verse. That scene fu$%ed me up the first time I saw it and still gets me to this day. I definitely knew we had to incorporate the verse somehow as a graphic element and you can see it on various pieces throughout the collection.

What is your favourite piece in the collection & why?
I thought the Photo woven button up shirt was executed really well. It really commemorates the movie as whole by mixing the most iconic scenes with some of the more obscure "deep cuts” that real fans of the movie will appreciate.

What other things can we expect to see from HUF in the future given how strong the brand is in streetwear & it’s reach into youth culture?
I can’t say too much, but just know that we’re constantly looking to bring something new to the market and push projects we’re passionate about. In this upcoming year, you’ll be seeing some really cool collaborations in the realms of pop culture, music, art and skate that you haven’t seen from any other brands in our space.
