Started by nature lovers Doug Tompkins and Suzie Buell Tompkins in 1966, The North Face is named for the coldest part of a mountain in the Northern Hemisphere. After a hiking trip to Minnesota’s Eagle Mountain, Doug was inspired to set up a small outdoor clothing and mountaineering store in San Francisco, and The North Face was born.

Selling equipment for climbers and backpackers, and later camping goods and skiwear, The North Face were ahead of their time in more ways than one, with the Grateful Dead playing live at the store’s grand opening.

After selling their original store and opening another across town, The North Face began manufacturing their own high-performance hiking and climbing gear, ski wear and sleeping bags. Their mantra was then, as it is now, ‘Never stop exploring’, and in the 1990s they extended their range, making their sportswear debut. Their performance apparel took off and soon they were making trail running and trekking shoes to help athletes and everyday people create their own adventures.

These days, The North Face is as much a fashion brand as it is for lovers of the great outdoors. With its classic silhouette, the iconic North Face jacket has become a go-to for travellers and as street wear, taking you from the footpath to the forest in a heartbeat.
