What is now a global apparel and adventurewear brand, Patagonia came from very humble beginnings. A love of rock climbing led the brands founder to start creating climbing equipment in his parents backyard and by 1970 they were the largest climbing hardware supplier in the United States. The brand quickly expanded its range to include apparel and began incorporating unique materials like polar fleece to develop a range that covered all layers from underwear to outerwear. Beyond their outward efforts, the company also shifted focus on their own environmental footprint and was a leader in using recycled materials like plastic bottles to create recycled polyester for their fleece products.

Shifts to organic cotton and non-toxic dyes were big steps in improving the brands environmental impact, and a focus on fair trade manufacturing in their supply chain means that they are supporting living wages for everyone involved in the production of their goods. The brand's commitment to the planet culminated in the 2022 transfer of the company’s ownership to a specially designed trust, with the commitment to ensure all profits are used to combat climate change.

A trademark of the brand's product range, their Synchilla® (synthetic chinchilla) fleece is a light-weight fabric made from at least 80% recycled polyester. The material is warm and blocks out the elements while remaining breathable and comfortable.
