4 Reasons To Love California with Kalani Robb

Back in the day, Kalani was touted as the “next Kelly Slater” when he was one of the youngest competing in the Momentum Generation. Fast forward a few years, he’s off the North Shore, out of the surfing world mainframe and has settled into the post-professional life in California. 

After living on the mainland for now a number of years, Kalani has picked up a few home grown delights along the way, especially ones you can get around when the winds are up, or the swell is down. 

Thankfully, if you’re planning on heading to the West Coast or need a little convincing, he was kind enough to share his top four reasons to love his new hometown. 

1. Disneyland

"Yeah Disneyland is cliche, but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t want to waste a couple of hours slinging yourself around on other worldly contraptions; it’s perfect for a weekend thrill when there’s nothing looming on the horizon

It’ll always stoke the kids out as well, so you can never really complain about having Disneyland closeby." 

2. You can drive 100mph* on the freeway

"The faster the better, who’s going to complain about getting to their destination a little bit earlier? As long as there’s no afternoon gridlock blocking your path then you’re sweet to drive up to 100 clicks an hour and if not then you can always take it slower in the right lane. 

It’s especially useful when the kids are asking, “are we there yet” on the way to Disneyland. However I wouldn’t recommend trying this after a couple of puffs, it’s more of a thrill for the sober state of mind." 

*The legal limit is actually 70mph – though we appreciate a little exaggeration here and there.

3. Catch Surf HQ

"Even when there’s no spectacular waves about, it doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and have a drift. Foamies and fun-boards liven up any lacklustre surf, whether you’re chop hopping a twin-fin or finless sliding on a foam log. The guys and girls at Catch Surf have you covered with all of your foam-filled love! 

Thankfully I’m lucky enough to be able to slide in to their HQ and loot the place for a couple new tees or even a new board to bounce around on in the shorey whenever I need."

4. The Terminator Was Our Governor 

"Everyone loves the Terminator and most people in California happen to have loved having Arnold Schwarzenegger as their Governor. He transitioned from bodybuilding, to Hollywood and then into politics. The dude is an all out weapon and legend!"
